Sunday morning in Beachwood Mall before the stores open and the hustle and bustle of shoppers ensue is quiet and peaceful. This tranquility would not last for long because today's CLE Fit tour stop was going to be with Jayne Spagnola, a.k.a. GiJayne. Just her nickname conjured up images of a tough, army boot camp complete with stern drill sergeant walking between the rows of sweaty soldiers. We were prepared with hydration of our favorite Nooma flavors, knowing that water was not going to be enough. Time to shake off the Sundaymorning cob webs, there would be no half-assin' it on GiJayne’s watch.
In her words, “I have to say my style of teaching or coaching is 'hard core' I am extremely strict about warming up my participants prior to the work out. And I am a stickler about perfect form.” ~ Jayne. She stayed true to these words as she took us through a great warm up and stretch before kicking it into high gear. The class was a classic bootcamp as we only needed our own body weight and resistance to make this a tough workout. As the camp began it felt like a cross between aerobics and kickboxing as we built upon each sequence in the series. We were prompted often where we were in each set because Jane wanted us to shout out our reps...just like real soldiers. When our shouts were too quiet there was a instant reminder from her to keep breathing and a, “How's everybody doing?”. We would again focus shouting, "7,8,9,10..." out loud as a group. The workout was tough and we felt it but pushed on. We had to laugh at ourselves as some of the kickboxing moves felt more like an aerobic dance as we tried to keep in step to the beat (ok it was just Andy! Ask him for a viewing of the video lol!). When she was through with us we had built strength in both our upper and lower bodies and at the same time kept our heart rate up for a great cardio workout. Interestingly not one of her classes in the past 34 years was choreographed as she enjoys changing it up, never missing a beat. Throughout class you felt the GiJayne energy and her passion for health and fitness. We found out later that this philosophy goes way beyond her classes, this is a lifestyle for her.
Here’s what she had to say to our team:
"I started back in the aerobic era teaching in the basement of a church. I taught during all three of my pregnancies. I literally have never stopped teaching. I have been a personal trainer for 10 years. I teach an array of classes; cross train circuit, kickboxing, barbell, TABATA, BootCamps, and functional training. My personal secret for maintaining a healthy active lifestyle is to never stop. Have that fear inside of you every day that says do not stop till you literally drop. Be conscious every day of what you're putting into your body. Eat clean, buy organic, and balance all your foods. Never use the word "diet". Find an eating plan that works for you and one that you can stick with, for the rest of your life. Don't starve yourself and don't step on the scale every day. Remember what works for one person may not work for the other. This is for the ladies. Don't be afraid to lift weights. Lifting weights and strength training is more important then hanging out on the cardio equipment for an hour. That's not to say cardio is not good. However, there should also be a balance between your weight training and your cardio. HIIT (high intensity interval training) is a great program to incorporate into your weekly workouts.
